My passion for music comes from childhood, learning the first chords on the guitar with my father. From then on, I began to study classical guitar in conjunction with a repertoire of Brazilian and Latin music. Later I deepened my studies on the 7-string nylon guitar and also on the semi-acoustic guitar, especially in the language of jazz and blues. I started teaching in my early 20's and have taught for over 20 years. Nothing beats seeing a student's reaction when they've learned something and can successfully implement it. It brings me a lot of joy! I also encourage and emphasize that my students get into or start bands to practice what they've learned to really see how jamming works. I am not strict in one specific style. I try to be malleable in my approach as I get to know the habits and abilities of each individual. I've had students for whom I thought it best to be more rigid and repetitive drill based, while others seem to benefit from a more passive guru. It's a spectrum. Always, though, I try to control the pace of the session, to speak thoughtfully, honestly, and constructively whilst always maintaining the utmost respect for the struggles that a student is facing. Since then I have taught piano to a student for 2 summers while home from school. I also volunteered for the nonprofit Alabama Blues Project camp in Tuscaloosa, where I met a student eager to learn guitar and drums, and I taught weekly lessons to him for a summer on both instruments. For Piano, I use several method books, including the Thompson Method, Shaum, Alfred, and Bastien. For Guitar I use Hal Leanard, Mel Bay, and several others. I also use interactive software of various kinds. And for Jazz, Blues and Rock improvisation, I use Band in a Box to provide backing tracks for the purpose of practicing improv over chord progressions. Band in a Box allows the student to simulate the experience of playing with a band in various styles and genres, with the possibility of change the chord progression and also changing the key and tempo.
