My experience goes back all the way to middle school. The first time I saw somebody playing a guitar I was surprised. I couldn't believe the melody that came out of it, and just how good it seemed the person playing was feeling. At the time I was about 11 years of age, when my mom bought my first guitar. I started playing very basic songs. Paint it Black by the Rolling Stones was the first song I learned, and I can remember like it was yesterday how hard it was for me to get used to carrying the guitar and the feeling of the strings in my fingers. I encourage all my students to learn the basic rudiments of music including music theory, sight-reading and playing ‘by ear’. I recommend Mel Bay’s “Children’s Guitar Method” and Hal Leonard’s “Guitar Method Book 1” for school age children. However, many of my students have decided to concentrate on learning basic theory involving chords and scales to develop ability to play ‘by ear’. When working with voice students I focus on basic theory, breath control, and vocal scales to develop student’s ability to discern musical intervals. Read More
