I like to think of my teaching styles and methods as very practical yet very encouraging and nurturing. The best way to ingrain a new concept or idea I have found is to teach someone a practical way in how to use it, usually through learning a new song or exercise which expands their horizons and outlook on things. Nothing invigorates me more than to see students get excited when they finally understand or grasp something I have taught them. Read More

As part of his coursework, he continued his guitar studies with David Becker and Tim Kobza, while also sitting in on master classes with Joe Diorio, Sid Jacobs, Pat Martino, Steve Trovato, and Pat Metheny. For his Ethnomusicology studies, Gabriel learned to play the tabla, a set of hand drums from India. He learned even more about Indian culture and music while abroad in India for 6 months in the fall/winter of 2006/2007, researching for his dissertation. Gabriel's fascination with Indian music has influenced not only his compositional writing and improvisational style, but also his teaching approach. Read More

Teaching the most basic concepts in how to build a chord or a scale by using formulas is my favorite way to approach the lesson. An individual's understanding of music is always changing therefore I feel it is better to change with them. Using methods which are proven is important, but the idea of improvisation during a lesson always keeps the interest for me and the student. Of course this depends completely on the age and the experience of a student. Read More

I like to first assess where the student is at experience wise as well as what their personal goals are. If they are just starting to play guitar I can show them chords and songs that are not too difficult and help them develop their style from the get go. If they are a little more advanced and have a grasp already on certain techniques and scales then I can help guide their interests more and help them realize their goals whether it be songwriting based or performance based I feel my method can help anyone interested. If there's a particular method book the student and/or parent want to use, they're the boss. If not or addition to, I simply teach HOW to play the instrument. I show them how to hold it, wrist/elbow positions and muscle memory techniques which are very important early on so bad habits don't develop to where they're playing the instrument versus fighting it. This is something I do with every new student regardless of their level, because they sought out a teacher for a very good reason. Read More

Hello, I am a passionate and dedicated musician teacher with both a bachelors and masters degree from California Institute of the Arts. I am a composer and multi-instrumentalist and I am dedicated to teaching and helping my students succeed. Every student is different so I make a point to craft every lesson to the individual and help them obtain whatever it is they want to get out of music, whether it be to just learn a simple song they like, or to help guide and mentor them on their path to making music a career. I'm very goal oriented with my students and flexible with their development. It is important to progress but also to take account of small achivements as much as large ones. Learning music is fun and the process should be fun through and through. Always emphasizing the positive aspects of a students performance and capabilities ensures a pleasant and fun experience for all involved. Read More
