I work from Hal Leonard's, and Berklee's libraries primarily, but most often use a smattering of tools, exercises, and excerpts that have worked for me and past students; creating a lesson plan over time that is better tailored to the student as an individual. At each lesson, I promote this by setting realistic goals for my pupils, either learning the most challenging parts of a song or just learning a simple phrase that was hard previously. Recognizing accomplishments fuels students' desire to advance and prepares them to learn more. For beginning students, I typically begin with a deep dive on rudimental studies and keyboard skills on drums and mallet percussion. I gradually introduce notation and music literacy tools to improve the students understanding of how the fundamentals of music interact with one another. I use a lot of rote teaching methods as well to take full advantage of how physical percussion and drums can be.
