For very young piano/keyboard students, lessons go more smoothly if they know right hand and left hand, count to 10 and know ABC's. They learn to read music almost immediately, and I give them the tools to be able to pick up any piece of music and play it independently. Regular performance opportunities are provided to show off acquired skills and progress of students and application of knowledge is encouraged through original composition. Read More

I've been playing music for most of my life. Growing up my whole family would all gather around the piano while my father played. Seeing how inspiring and influential music could be at a young age helped me to develop a passion for it. I am very grateful to share my passion with others through teaching. I specialize in teaching improvisational styles, such as blues, jazz, and funk. I work with my students to create a good balance of a strong technical foundation and creative jamming skills which builds both the intellectual and intuitive sides of music, and helps them become well-rounded musicians. I'm a passionate artist who took the leap from a financial career to creative education! I graduated UT with a degree in mathematics and started working as a retirement consultant. The three years of my financial career was new and intimidating, but my love for art and music was always comfortable and freeing. I chose to leave a lucrative career once I found that building a relationship with students and sharing my knowledge was not only more rewarding, but fun and exciting as well. Read More

One of my main methods when it comes to learning how to play a song is Sound Studio, which is a sound editing computer application. It has helpful tools such as changing pitch and tempo (independently of one another), selecting, cutting, looping, changing volume, adding effects, and may other functions. I would highly recommend this application or something comparable to students trying to learn songs and I can teach how to use it. Read More

My approach to teaching is based on the goals of each individual student. I always ask the student what their skill level is and what their goals are, and I use that information to create the right lesson for each individual. I also always encourage students to be honest about what they like and don't like about the lessons, and I am never bothered if a student doesn't like something or wants to do things differently. The more exposure I've had to teaching, the more I have grown to love the challenge and opportunity that comes with sharing my passion for music with others. In the past few years, I've had students as young as 7 and as old as 55. In each case, I've been careful to craft a curriculum that meets the interest and ability of each student. Read More

For violin I usually use Suzuki Method and will introduce etudes like Wohlfahrt or Kreutzer. I also have fun with Christmas music, pop and fiddle. If they are young children aged 4-6, I will use the "I Can Read Music" by Joanne Martin. For guitar I use a variety of different classical method and etude books. In addition, I will introduce different genres according to what each student wants to learn, for example, rock, pop, worship, etc. Read More
