I teach students the basic guitar skills and musicianship. I believe with a good foundation students can progress really quickly. For beginning students, I teach them basic chord structures and chord progressions. For intermediate student, I teach them scales, arpeggios and advance chord progression. And for advance students, I teach them different chord voicing, use of arpeggios during improvisation and modal theory. In addition, I try to find out goals of the students and make sure they reach their goal in required time. Read More

In essence, my love of teaching stems from my Mom's love of teaching. She sincerely desired to teach my siblings and myself to pursue our highest dreams. It turned out that I did succeed as a star performer in music, on stages around the world. But also, when I decided to settle down, I added education to my 10-year plan. So, I went back to school for another master's degree, and taught music in CPS - performing three nights per week with my the Bartels/Benson duo, Connexion Band, Prohibition Orchestra, Bryan Skyler Trio, and other groups. My methods differ depending on a students age and experience level. For the younger students who are just beginning their journey we will learn out of Hal Leonard's books for guitar or Piano Adventures for piano students. As a student progresses we will begin to take the learning outside of these books and more to music theory, technique, and to the application of these practices onto the instrument. For younger students I will make the lesson more fun and interactive, keeping the lesson positive and not viewing it as a chore. Read More

I'm still trying to figure out how to put it down. This passion naturally led me to attend Berklee College of Music, which I graduated from in 2015. During my years at Berklee, I took advantage of many opportunities to perform and gig around the Northeast with numerous award winning bands. I enjoy nothing more than sharing the secrets I have learned from years of studying guitar and performing around New England. Read More

Because I accept children as young as 3, my methods vary quite drastically. I also work with children who have learning disabilities, so I like to cater my lessons to the needs of the student. We play a LOT of games and when I feel they are ready, they can progress to books. I use everything from Hal Leonard and Bastien to Alfred and Faber Faber. Being a Special Education Aide, I understand that no book is a one size fits all". Read More

Music provides students with both expression and community, both of which I believe students- and all people- need.As a teacher, I believe that my strongest commitment and my best effort are the birthright of each and every one of my students. Just as I believe that students who struggle should be given the additional help that they need in order to continue and eventually learn, I believe that students who excel should be offered the avenues that they crave in order to satiate their desires for greater challenges. As a teacher, I believe one of my greatest responsibilites is to foster a love and care for music. If the student is not caring about music, then why are they studying? How will they progress? The best students are the ones who teach themselves. I can show the student the door, but he or she must walk through it. My second greatest responsibility is to teach the craft of music - including all the disciplines it needs. Read More

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Perfect practice makes perfect! Even if you are doing something at a slow pace, but doing it perfectly, it is much better than doing it fast and not having correct technique. You will eventually get the speed, but how you are executing the technique is what's important.
I started playing piano when I was 7, and even 15 minutes a day was effective when I first started. If you can practice more, great! But if you can't, just allow yourself 15-20 minutes a day, and you will start to see results. Always practice in a quiet and tranquil space with no distractions around. It should be your safe space that you love to be in!
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
If they start asking about music, responding well to it, and showing and interest in it, they are ready! I remember asking my mother at age 7 if I could take piano lessons, and I'm so fortunate she was willing to let me do that because it started me on a lifelong musical journey.
If they understand an alphabet and basic reading skills, they can definitely learn music notes and a scale. I believe it will only help them in their other subjects they are learning, and will improve their attention span.
When will I start to see results?
Everyone is different, so it's hard to exactly say when you will see results. You might see results immediately, and for others it might take a couple months. Your main goal should be to see a difference in yourself, not to compare to how fast or slow others are learning. Every lesson you will be learning something and will be a mini milestone for you. You should feel proud of the fact you are learning and executing new techniques. Sometimes a goal can just be to have better breath control, and if you are doing that in your scales and exercises, you will see the results!
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
My elementary school music teacher was also my violin teacher in 3rd grade, and then my chorus teacher in 5th grade. She taught me how to sing and find a love in expressing yourself through music. I felt that she inspired me to never be afraid with music, and it was always my first love. Without her guidance, I don't know if I would've found out that I love singing so much. She was always patient, kind and inspiring. She was always encouraging and always was excited when her students made improvements and showed an interest in music. All she asked was for a smile every day and to put in your best effort which is something that still holds true for me today.
