I've also found that a combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy the piano and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. If a student isn't having fun in their lessons, then I'm not doing my job! My students are encouraged to enter competitions and recitals, as well as work on composing their own original material, so they can feel good about their accomplishments and stay motivated to learn. I am passionate about teaching and exploring the infinite possibilities that only have to be discovered by each person. I been studying and playing the guitar for 39 years, and sincerely believe that every person has the innate ability to communicate through music, no matter what level of skill. I treat every time I play the guitar as if it were the first time, and every time, I discover something that helps me to forge my own unique path on the journey, and overcoming the obstacles that inevitably present themselves on the journey. For younger students I employ the Suzuki Method which comprises a series of books and particular approach to teaching that I've found to be quite effective. The books provide a very well thought out sequence of pieces that help the student learn all of the necessary skills to play the guitar in the context of actual music rather than abstract exercises, and the method encourages a lot of parental involvement which helps to make at home practice (the most important part of learning any instrument) much more effective. This led to gigs playing "Footloose" and "Grease" and Fallsburg High School in the upper Hudson Valley. From 2011-2012, I interned at the National Guitar Workshop in New Milford, CT where I study pedagogy (teaching styles) and got to attend a master class with shred-guitar heavy weight Paul Gilbert. After New Paltz, I moved to NYC and earned my Masters Degree at the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College and taking advantage of the cultural offerings of the big city before moving back to Buffalo, NY in 2013.
