I begin my Classical students with the Julian Sagreras guitar method book, then move into the Aaron Shearer Learning the Classic Guitar series. Once students have a firm grasp of the fundamentals, we begin on solo repertoire. For contemporary styles, I prefer to start complete beginners on the Hal Leonard guitar method books, and then I encourage them to seek out artists that they enjoy. In all of my lessons, students will analyze chord structures, sing and dictate melodies, and learn history about the guitar and general music. Read More

Having graduated college only less than a year ago, my field teaching experience is minimal, but I did teach/tutor occasionally during my formal education. At Carnegie Hall I worked in part as a bandleader and arranger for my youth ensemble and acquired basic arrangement and collaboration skills. At Berklee I worked briefly as a music theory tutor and helped fellow students more cohesively grasp basic principals of harmony. Born in South Africa and raised in Oxford, UK, I began my career as a professional touring and recording musician at the age of sixteen. As a member of the band Stornoway, I had the incredible privilege of touring the world and playing some of it’s most renowned stages, performing live on the UK’s biggest music television program, “Later...with Jools Holland”, alongside Jay Z, Foo Fighters, Norah Jones, and Sting, recording live sessions in the infamous Abbey Road studios for mainstream BBC Radio programs, being interviewed by top music journalists as well as performing on some of the BBC’s main prime-time radio and television political programs including Andrew Marr’s talk-show, and receiving a silver record from BMI for record sales - all before the age of 25. By the 5th grade I was performing with a genuine garage band, making our debut performance headlining at our elementary schools talent show. From that time forward I've been in countless multifarious bands and have been performing music in some form or other ever since. My approach to teaching varies in accordance with a students playing level and needs. With beginners and young students, experience has taught me that it is best to get someone playing actual music as soon as possible, usually in the first lesson. It is just as well to have a student begin by learning a simple riff from a song that they like, as to make them learn some hokey melody from a one size fits all how-to book.Going forward, I continue to work with a new player on music that they would like to play, while simultaneously covering music theory, and technical information, as they relate to the choice of repertoire.
