To me, music is the perfect marriage of discpline and freedom. In order for students to develop the ability to express themselves through music, My approach combines technical skills with creative development. With each student, I design an invidiual cirricullum that allows them to clearly see their progress over time and experience the joy and satisfaction of acomplishment. Whatever a student's goals, I develop lesson plans that will accomplish them, and I encourage students to develop their own capabilities. Read More

I determined that when i would finally get off the road, buy a house, and raise children, the i would afford other young people the type of musical understanding that i was given, outside of the school/conservatory environment. And thats what i do. As a result, many students of mine have been given scholarships and grants equal to, or exceeding the cost of their education at such esteemed places as Juilliard, Berkeley School of Music, Peabody Conservatory , Capital University, Cincinnati Conservatory, andthe University of the US Virgin Islands. I like to utilize many avenues of teaching and learning music. There are a handful of books I like to use for both beginner and advanced guitarists. The internet is a vast resource that contains just about anything you would want to know! Google and YouTube are great for learning songs, techniques and theory without need for a teacher or even an instrument. For intermediate to advanced players, I have some books, authors, guitarists and Internet personalities I might point to. Read More

My teaching experience began while attending college and has been on and off with my performing schedule but I believe the performance has help me focused on teaching from real-world experience. I therefore dont like to spend a lot of time during lessons on topics a student may never use. This also helps the student hold interest in their lessons. I approach teaching from the students perspective, whenever possible and try to always emphasize the musical style they are most interested in. Read More

I like to have a very laid back, fun lesson for every student. Reinforcing that every person learns at their own pace is very important, as well as teaching good practice habits. I also like to remind everyone that mistakes are normal, and that even the best musicians make mistakes quite often. Listening to music is a must for any musician, so I often like to find and listen to a little music during lessons as well. Read More

When beginning teaching I typically assess the learners general attention span, natural strengths, and what is motivating for them. I complete a beginner piano assessment to find out how the learner is with pattern recognition, any previous knowledge they may have, and what type of instruction they respond best to. When I understand the learners least restrictive environment I will choose the type of notation we start with. This can be traditional sheet music, pop chords, or adapted notation that may consist of numbers, letters, and/or colors. Read More

I believe wholeheartedly that music is supposed to be fun and I have every intention of keeping it that way as an instructor. That isn't to say that learning the guitar is easy. Unfortunately, for most of us it just isn't. However, I do believe that the best way to approach the guitar is recognizing that 1) You're never done learning and 2) That's a good thing. Treating every accomplishment and victory with the proper pat on the back is crucial. Read More
