I believe in allowing each student to decide their level of engagement with music. While some prefer to simply learn the basics of an instrument, others want to delve into more in-depth musical concepts and theory, and no one approach in more relevant than another. I look to show beginning or growing musicians the feeling of accomplishment that learning a new piece of music provides. Through exploring the songs and music that a student is most engaged with, as well as classics in a variety of genres, students gain a sense of how theory and/or techniques craft the music they love and know and that they, too, can create music that might one day be studied by future students. I am twenty-two and was raised in a musical household as the second youngest of six sisters and one brother. I include the parents as well in this conversation for the younger students, as I find that some parents want their children to learn how to read beginning at a young age. I cater the lessons towards what the student wants while emphasizing the importance of fundamentals and theory. I incorporate songwriting and improvisation into my lessons, as well as songs the student wants to learn. I believe all students should be encouraged to be creative, while still maintaining a strong emphasis on fundamentals, thus leading to the creation of their unique musical style. I generally tend to split the lessons up into warm up techniques, repertoire, sight reading, listening/dictation, discussing music the student likes/wants to learn, and improvisation and songwriting. Many people remember music lessons in their youth as a time consuming source of frustration, built upon outdated music with no connection to the student's day to day life. This is why I like to divide lessons between fundamentals such as reading and theory, and apply those practices to the students' favorite songs. The greatest thing is to be able to see a student perform the music they love, so the real goal is for the student to build a repertoire of favorite songs to perform for family, friends, on-line or onstage.
