The best way to teach is to teach yourself all over again. I love to set realistic goals, while giving them a harder piece to juxtapose their progress. I never pressure them or bog them down with too much. Acknowledging their progress is always a great way to motivate them. For example, classical guitar requires perfection of technique for good execution. This requires practice of scales, arpeggios and such.
