 In addition to teaching I am an active freelance flute and piccolo player. I love playing in symphonies and opera orchestras and have worked with conductors Pierre Vallet, Keith Chambers, and David Bernard among others. I particularly love the exhilaration of soaring above the orchestra on piccolo. I have performed at venues throughout the city including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and Symphony Space.  I received my Bachelor's in Music in Flute Performance from New York University, graduating summa cum laude in 2007. In 2011 I was commissioned to create a piece for a closure of European Capital of Culture. With multimedia artist Zeljka Blaksic he created Resistance of the Earth, which is a multimedia project that combines several artistic genres; from video, performance, 16 mm film to live music. As an educator, I believe it is important to continue school music instruction into private flute lessons. I like to communicate with a child's school music teacher in the beginning of flute lessons, so that I can keep music terminology consistent for students, as well as reinforce concepts they're already learning (while expanding musically of course!). I like to have students keep a lesson packet where progress is documented, along with a journal--I find that reflecting for five minutes after a practice session (things that went well, things you need help on, questions), are important tools when striving for success. I approach teaching on an individual basis, meaning it's important to me to know the goals, hopes, passions, and if applicable, the worries or insecurities the student is feeling. In a first lesson I identify something that is special and unique about each student, and build their technique from this place. I find this helps the difficult areas feel a little less challenging because they already have something they feel proud of when working through the discomfort of something new or intimidating.
