I'm a dedicated and passionate multi-instrumentalist and composer and have been sharing my love of music with students of all ages since 2009. I studied jazz performance at the New England Conservatory of Music and my curiosity in other styles of music has led me to branch out into classical music, rock, electronic, and a variety of folk musics from different parts of the world. I'm lucky to have been able to perform in and around Seattle, Boston, Europe and now Brooklyn. Read More

I love seeing my students get better, and different things make different students improve. I like to find what that is for each individual student. For example, some are more interested in reading the notes, and others are better at learning by ear. I try to work with each student's strong points and use the strengths to work on improving the weaknesses. Read More

Daryl's time at MAP, prepared him for entry to the prestigious high school Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School for Music and Art and the Performing Arts, where he was a flute instrumental music major. He continued to study with Jayn Rosenfeld during his freshmen year, while he played as principal flute player in the Bronx Burowide Band/Orchestra. He also was the Piccolo Soloist for Sousa's March "Stars and Stripes Forever". Read More

I began teaching flute students as a high school student myself, and taught a few lessons in college. I admit my experience is limited, but I definitely have the knowledge, the expertise, and the passion it takes to make a great teacher, as well as having several music teachers with long, successful careers in my family that I can turn to for mentoring. I first ask the student to play so I can hear him/her. After a student plays a short piece of music of their own choosing I can determine what the next step is. Each student has his/her own individual needs. In general though I focus on 3 key elements: 1) Sound quality 2) Technical dexterity (how the fingers deal with the twists and turns of the instrument) 3) Reading Music If a student has a specific genre of music that he/she wants to focus on then I mainly concentrate on that. I began my teaching days informally when I was still a student at Fairport High School. Some family friends wanted to learn how to play saxophone, so I began teaching them. Next thing I knew, I had a small-time music studio in my parents' basement! I was teaching saxophone as well as jazz improvisation at that time. I took a break from teaching when I went to college, and began teaching again the summer after I graduated. Read More

Do you use specific teaching methods or books? (Ex: Alfred, Bastion, Suzuki, Hal Leonard) Why did you choose them if you did?
There are some decent books from long ago I would use, including a Maquarre Daily Exercises for Flute. Kohler etudes are also good for learning technical clhalleges on the flute.
What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
Actually playing now, after many years not. Recently I sat in with two NY level exemplary musicians and a 16 year old on drums. At 76 I held my own, the pianist said I drove the group on the second tune we did, I'll Remember April. It is all about now for me, and playing better on a personal level. The video attached gives an indication of my present abilities.
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
It was not my choice, and in my opinion, not they way to choose. My dad came home one day with a flute and clarinet. He chose for my brother and me. In high school for a time I played saxophone, and was going to continue later in life but unfortunatley had an injury which impeded my playing ability for many years. Over time I also play, more like use, the piano for compositon and jazz theory and harmony.
Have any of your students won awards or been selected for special honors? How have they succeeded?
Years ago I taught a students who was accepted and played with the All Shore Intermediate Band. As principal my students have won awards in different areas not limited to Monmouth County Volunteers and Teacher Volunteer of the year.
What do you think is the hardest thing to master on your instrument?
Playing well is a holistic approach. This includes tone matching in the three registers keeping a resonant tone in the highest register. For all, including myself, who seek to improve and excel learning to playing passages and parts slowly in time is highly important. This is another way to say that patience with progress matters.
What does a normal practice session look like for you?
I have in my older age shied away from the idea of practice, replacing it more with play. A "normal" playing session would be prescribed in notes to the student, yet the student could choose the order - warm ups, technical exercises, scales, and pieces.
If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
I do not have a degree but have taken college level classes in Keyboard Harmony and Jazz Improvisation. My lessons with Frances Blaisdell were of the highest level of expertise.
What is your dream piece to perform and why?
As an improvisational piece, I am learning Charlie Parker's solo on Koko, which is a rewriting of the tune Cherokee.
I am working on tunes I have played - Syrinx by Debussy and Fantasie by Faure.
What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
I listen to and play jazz and classical music. I learn now from listening to exemplary performances on youtube. Favorite classical composers include Ravel, Debussy, Faure, Bartok, Brahms, Beethoven, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Dvorak, Sondheim, and Bernstein to name a few.
For jazz I listen and continue to learn the jazz standards not limited to Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Lee Morgan, Charlie Parker, Budd Powell, Thelonious Monk, Tadd Dameron, Horace Silver, Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson, and others too numerous to include here.
If you play more than one instrument, how did you decide to start playing the second? (Or 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc)!
I played for a while saxophone when in college and learned to play the piano when taking a keyboard harmony class with Kenny Barron at Rutgers, Livingston in the mid 70s.
Does music run in your family? Tell us a little about your musical family members.
Yes. My father was a drummer who played in the Catskills during the Depression, and could play several piano pieces he learned on his own, not limited to Claire de Lune.
His father was a cellist who played with Arthur Fiedler in a string quartet in his youth.
My grandfather's father was the concert master with the Imperial Orchestra of Kiiv.
This family history is documented by photographs and text.
When did you decide to become a professional musician? Was it a gradual decision or was there a defining moment for you?
I am not a professional musician, although I have played in professional level contexts.
