I have been teaching since age 15 (1999). In addition to extensive performing experience on clarinet, I have functioned as a piano accompanist, choir member, and praise band member through the years. My methods of teaching are teaching what and how to practice. The basic ingredients in music are scales and chords and space. I am a firm believer of playing with a rhythm section from the beginning. Because of this, I use devices such as playing with tracks, myself, and other people. I provide audio and visual examples using recordings and videos. I like to use Trevor Wye's methods when I teach. I own the 6 volumes and I recommend that my students buy at least one of his books as well. For more advanced players, I introduce Paul Edmund-Davies' Daily Exercises. I stress the importance of long tones for the effect they can have on a flautist's tone, color, volume, etc. As mentioned before, I will also encourage students to enter competitions and/or find another opportunity to perform their piece in front of an audience/judges panel. Finding what inspires the student is an important part of my teaching. With this information I can successfully tailor my instruction to the students desires and needs. I acknowledge accomplishments which helps fuel the students desire to progress and makes them eager to learn. It is important that the student progress at their own pace. As a teacher, I try not to stress rote learning but instead focus on explanations for why music works the way it does. I find that music of any genre is much easier to study if you have an understanding of the framework of what you practice. To that end, I stress technical study that works towards grooming pieces or songs for performance and make sure that my students have a complete understanding of both music and their instrument.
