At the start of the lesson, I will emphasize tone and air control which I've found makes a huge difference as a warm up. The primary books I will work out of are Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. As students progress and I feel that they have a handle on the basics, I will slowly start to incorporate other repertoire that will be exciting to play and perform. Also, it's never too early to start teaching scales and having students memorize them which will greatly help and improve their technical ability. Read More

My Name is Taylor Clay, and I am a passionate and driven performer and educator who loves working with students and inspiring them to reach their full potential. In 2012, I graduated from the Crane School of Music in New York with a Bachelor of Music degree in Saxophone Performance. During that time I studied classical, jazz and latin music. I have also had the opportunity to study and perform with world renound artists such as Eric Alexander, Wynton Marsalis, Lenny Pickett, Christopher Creviston and Donny McCaslin. Read More

For beginner students, I try to get them to learn a song by the first lesson. Eventually, I start them off by focusing on technique (learning notes and scales), tone development, etudes, and repertoire. Efficiency of effort in the fingers, usage of air, and holding of the body in order to produce a beautiful sound is a top priority. I believe the connection between the mind and body is very important, and you will find me often asking questions to engage the students in being aware of what they are doing as they are playing. I like to have my students progress to a point where they feel comfortable picking a song of their choice, transcribing it as accurately as possible, and playing it. For advanced students: there is no set structure for advanced students, as their requests and sets of strengths and weaknesses are so individually specific that I have to create a specific lesson plan for each student. However, one theme that I love to introduce advanced musicians to in terms of music theory are the psycho-acoustics and emotional manipulation of specific chord progressions, modes, cadences, and modal interchange. I enjoy building relationships with my students and making them feel comfortable. I love seeing my students achieve goals and confidence. I have a strong background in classical music/flute performance. I've studied in France with one of the best flutists and continue to study with her online. I take my work seriously and always have fun! I focus on positive reinforcement and motivate my students to be their best selves. Read More

I ask all of my students to be prepared for their lessons with a notebook and pencil for lesson notes and assignments. I ask them to bring any materials they have and will often recommend books and supplemental material I have had success with. I believe in writing down notes that help students understand what they are learning, exactly what students should practice, and setting goals for their practice and overall progress. Read More

I started teaching two years ago at a private lesson studio in Denver called My Music Skool. My main focus was on piano and saxophone. Now I teach privately as a freelance musician. Two points I emphasize when teaching are practicing at least once a day no matter how long you play and learning what inspires you. There will always be some sort of theory I sneak in whether it's learning scales or building technical skills that will build confidence and ability, but if these devices aren't being applied to the type of music that inspires the student, then learning music becomes discouraging instead of fun.
