I've been teaching in the greater Los Angeles area for almost 20 years, teaching students from ages 4 - 92 (yes, really! 92!). My teaching style is very much praxial and based off of skill reinforcement. For any instrument, I will incorporate the Kodaly method (solfege) of musicianship into the curriculum. For me, my goal is to teach the student how to learn for themselves. I focus on practice techniques, assessment of tone, sound, rhythms, pitches, etc. Rather than spoon feed all of the answers to the students, I wish to encourage each musician to develop their own critical mind towards the art that they create. For beginner students I will use the book "Accent on Achievements" by Jack O'Reilly and Mark Williams. I will show them the fundamentals of their saxophones. I will teach students all the correct fingerings and the alternate fingerings. I will teach students how to read, write, and sight read sheet music. So I did. I also engaged with a Masters program at Hunter which I enjoyed and definitely improved my skills as a teacher in the Fall of 2009. Ultimately, I did not stay in that program because I was already teaching so much in a so many different settings.
