Teaching is very new to me. For beginning students I would start with a Hal Leonard's Essential Elements book. Then when the student progresses the fundamentals I will start to introduce solo pieces for recital performance. For adults I will ask them what would be fun for them to play and make my lesson plans off of that to keep them engaged and having fun no matter what level they are. Read More

I incorporate method books into all of my lessons, as well as any technique books that are appropriate for each specific student. The method books that I begin with are Essential Elements, the I Recommend series, Standard of Excellence, and Tradition of Excellence. The technique books depend on the specific instrument and ability level. I feel that it is very important to get every student playing actual sheet music as soon as possible, regardless of skill level. Read More

I began teaching when I was a high school student, about 7 years ago, with the flute. I was part of the school symphony so took students from my class and tutored them on their technique and stamina to play richer, louder, longer tones. After becoming involved with more children as well as children with special needs through my work in university I began teaching musicality to kids in different settings, which led me to start teaching the piano to beginners. David began playing clarinet in 1972 at age 6. A few years later he added the saxophone, and subsequently, the flute. He has been playing professionally for 30 years, and teaching privately for over 20 years. While attending Temple University, he had the opportunity to study with many of the finest performers and instructors in the Philadelphia region. Due to his interest in both classical music and jazz, his teachers included members of the Philadelphia Orchestra (Larry Wagner - Clarinet, Angelo DiMatteos - Flute) as well as some of the most well respected jazz players on the east coast. (Larry McKenna - Sax, Mike Natale - Trumpet, Bob Shilling - Jazz Theory/Arranging). Read More

Playing duets and tunes form the basis of lessons. You will learn scales and chords, rhythm, tone and being in tune. I like to include a bit of playing without reading music, depending on what your inclination is. For more advanced flutists, we will play Bach, Mozart, Telemann, Quantz (a flutist!) and whatever music you like and bring to the lesson. I sometimes use play alongs so we can play with piano or orchestra. Read More

I have over a decade’s combined experience teaching music to K-12 and adult students of all levels, including four years of TA’ing college-level music courses. I have worked as a private flute and piano teacher, an after-school program instructor, a summer music camp teacher, and as a substitute music theory instructor at a community music school. While at UC Davis, I was a TA for several music courses, including introductory music theory, introductory music history, and intermediate ear training. Read More

My methods vary from student to student, as I am very sensitive and flexible to the needs of the student as an individual. If the flutist plays in a band or orchestra at school, I like to review the music with them so they feel comfortable with it before we move on to lesson repertoire. Scales are also very important! (yes, I am one of those teachers :-) In terms of books I consistently use, I am particularly fond of Trevor Wye's books for beginners, the 'Melodious and Progressive Studies' etude books for any level, and Taffanel and Gaubert's daily exercise book for intermediate/advanced students.
