He has been playing professionally for 30 years, and teaching privately for over 20 years. Playing duets and tunes form the basis of lessons. You will learn scales and chords, rhythm, tone and being in tune. I like to include a bit of playing without reading music, depending on what your inclination is. For more advanced flutists, we will play Bach, Mozart, Telemann, Quantz (a flutist!) and whatever music you like and bring to the lesson. My methods vary from student to student, as I am very sensitive and flexible to the needs of the student as an individual. If the flutist plays in a band or orchestra at school, I like to review the music with them so they feel comfortable with it before we move on to lesson repertoire. Scales are also very important! (yes, I am one of those teachers :-) In terms of books I consistently use, I am particularly fond of Trevor Wye's books for beginners, the 'Melodious and Progressive Studies' etude books for any level, and Taffanel and Gaubert's daily exercise book for intermediate/advanced students.
