Initially (and throughout) I place a high value on performance fundamentals. I start with a focus on proper posture and breathing. Once this can be executed I breakdown the nomenclature of the student's instrument, how to put it together and break it down. For beginning students I teach out of the Rubank Elementary Method books. These books are most comprehensive for beginning students. As the student progresses I begin introducing them to solo repertoire, scales studies, and jazz improvisation. My approach is much different with adult students. I ask them what are their musical goals and from there I can create a curriculum based on adult students needs and wants. I generally start off my beginners with A.C. Peterson's Rubank Elementary Method or Bruce Pearson's Standard of Excellence. After they develop the basic skills, I will move the student onto Robert Cavally's Melodious and Progressive Studies etude book. From there, I may introduce solo repertoire into the curriculum. For beginning students who are children, I use the Rubank Method for Flute as well as Pares Scales. Once they have become more advanced I assign more challenging etude and scale books. When the student has a grasp of the instrument,I present solo repertoire and orchestral excerpts tailored for each level.
