I am a passionate and loving instructor who cares deeply about music education, and flute education. I have been a private flute instructor since 2006, and a middle and high school band director for the past 5 years. I graduated from Western Carolina University in 2012 with dual degrees in Music Education, with a concentration in Flute. I was in the Piccolo section of the Pride of the Mountains Marching Band, as well as Woodwind Coordinator my final 2 seasons. I performed in the WCU Wind Ensemble for my entire collegiate career, as well as with the WCU Flute Ensemble. For the past 5 years, I have been in the greater-Charlotte area performing with Carolinas Wind Orchestra, First Baptist Indian Trail, and have been teaching privately to middle school, high school and college level students. I currently perform in the Athens area, am part of the Athens Flute Choir, and work with the UGA Redcoat Piccolo section.
My teaching experience dates back to my high school education, as I began teaching privately and section based rehearsals at the age of 16. Encouraging students consistency in a regular and specific practice schedule is one of the key points I emphasize with all students. I like to maintain a balance of traditional classical music as well as modern music to keep a healthy relationship between all musicians and their craft. The more inspired you are by your music, and our lessons together, the more you are likely to practice and enjoy your music making ability. All of my students are encouraged to participate in live performances/recitals, take auditions and perform for competitions and adjudicated events.
For beginning and intermediate students, I typically start with the basic understanding of the musical staff, note names, and how to associate those names with the flute fingerings. I use a wide variety of method books for students of all ages to gauge what students do and do not know theoretically. Tone production and quality comes from working through breath control and regular exercises from the practices of Geoffrey Gilbert, William Bennet, Marcel Moise, Paul Taffenell, and Eldred Spell. My instruction guides students to make their best music while enjoying creating music on flute.
Nothing is more important to me than to see students happy and making progress. It is my belief that practice does not make perfect, but makes progress. Progress creates thoughtful music making. It is important that all students progress at his or her own pace, guided by a loving and passionate teacher dedicated to assisting his or her progress. I set realistic goals for my students at each lesson, and provide week long practice schedules with realistic goals for each practice session. By acknowledging their accomplishments, my students are fueled with eagerness to work towards progress. I try to find out what inspires each student so that I can tailor my instruction to his or her needs.
