Instruments: Flute
For beginners students, I start with Trevor Wye's Beginners Book for Flute, as well as Rubank's selected duets (Volume 1), and Marcel Moyse The Debutante Flutist. Once we have covered the basic foundations of the flute and have formed a core sound, I then introduce solo repertoire that is appropriate for the students. For all of my students, I always like to ask what they are interested in playing, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Read More

Over the course of many years, I've developed a method for beginning piano and woodwind students which yields excellent results. For the first series of lessons, I want the student to become comfortable in understanding the keyboard or the wind instrument, avoiding the secondary interface of sight reading. There are about twenty short, simple, basic songs I have the student master. At this point, not only are we working on understand the harmonic and melodic "hardware" of the keyboard or horn, but we are developing proper technique in terms of hand position, posture and sound as well as a natural rhythmic feel. There is nothing more gratifying for me than watching my students grow over time. I believe that success is achieved with a healthy balance of slow methodical practice and frequently playing fun and challenging music. I believe that every student is different and there is no right way to teach an instrument. I try to tailor my lessons to the student's special way of learning to ensure that our time together is well spent. Read More

I work together with my students to create realistic goals for growth and success. I believe in having high expectations for my students because I love seeing growing passion and love for something that is so important to me! I also make it a priority to create a safe space for my students to be able to communicate with me about goals and material. I make sure to try and get to know my students in order to help them grow as much I possibly can, to understand how each individual learns so I can create specific and individualized programs! My teaching style can most accurately be described as patient and creative. Music should be fun. The student should enjoy practicing. It is my job to create a lesson plan that allows a student to progress steadily, without straining the limits of their abilities. I feel that it is important to focus on the individuals goals and interests so that each lesson is meaningful to that particular student..I focus on music, not exercises. Read More

If following a school band's curriculum we can work on whatever book they require. To make lessons more personal we will move at the pace of the student, however most of the time their band director will have weekly playing assignments, It will be my goal to make sure each students is fully prepared for the assignment and for the more ambitious students, to go beyond. The student can come in with band music or we can find a music interest and strive towards improving while working on something they enjoy. Read More
Instruments: Flute Piccolo
I like to being on creating a wonderful sound, and a very good concept of rhythm which relates not only to fingers, but also and internal pulse. I like to also focus a lot on the exhale of air into the instrument, and the relationship to blowing air through technical passages. Once this is grasped, working on scales, various etude books, and applying these concepts to the repertoire works well for both beginner and advanced students. Read More
