My teaching experience began in 2008, when I began teaching private lessons on various instruments, on voice, and on conducting. I later went on to teach band and choir at Cedar Bluff High School in 2011. After this, I volunteered as the band director at Valley Head High School in 2014. I have enjoyed every moment of teaching music and have taken so much from the experiences that I've had. My goal as a teacher is to help students cultivate a lifelong passion for music! To do this, I first identify a student's musical goals. These goals could be things like getting a superior rating at solo and ensemble, auditioning into an honor band, learning more about a genre of music, or just to have fun! I believe in positive affirmation and goal setting. My goal with all students is that they enjoy learning, become self-motivated to practice, and consider their musical abilities as a gift which they can choose to share with others whenever they feel comfortable to do so. I have experience using a variety of method books and can easily recommend appropriate materials. For students beginning in an elementary band program, I like to use the same book (such as Essential Elements) that they are using in school. With students learning outside of a band class, or if it won't interfere with what they've already learned, I start with just the headjoint of the flute, making sure the student is comfortable producing clear sound before adding the body of the flute. Because the flute is not like the other woodwind instruments in that you do not blow directly into it, it can be challenging for students to learn how to form an embouchure. Read More

I like to have my students progress to a point where they feel comfortable picking a song of their choice, transcribing it as accurately as possible, and playing it. For advanced students: there is no set structure for advanced students, as their requests and sets of strengths and weaknesses are so individually specific that I have to create a specific lesson plan for each student. However, one theme that I love to introduce advanced musicians to in terms of music theory are the psycho-acoustics and emotional manipulation of specific chord progressions, modes, cadences, and modal interchange. I have started teaching private lessons since high school through the Suzuki Method, and into my college and graduate school years.  I have taken classes on pedagogy and teaching artistry in creative ways, such as teaching students to do improvisations and asking questions in order to get them engaged in the learning process.  I have played classical, jazz, pop, and latin music, and can teach an array of different genres.
