Any time I teach, I make sure to plan every lesson so that the student(s) can progress as far as possible every time they are learning with me. With school-age students, I use the Orff Schulwerk approach often, incorporating their own ideas into the lesson and having them learn through various senses (imagery, movement, games, etc.). There are a couple of good method books, but introducing appropriate solo repertoire as early as possible creates a sense of self accomplishment, and so I normally follow my teaching instincts to know exactly the best time to bring this into the picture. Students will also likely have a theory workbook or worksheets that match the level of their current repertoire. Intermediate students, we will start using a program called smart music that plays the accompaniment for pieces that we are working on.
