For younger students, I find that book based methods are very helpful, and typically I go through the Hal Leonard Essential Elements Series. Once the student has a firm handle of the basics of saxophone (fingerings, embouchure, dynamics, etc.) then I start having them read etude books, and prepare pieces for recitals and other performances or auditions. For adults, I like to teach based on a goal oriented program. I typically start beginner students on the Rubank Elementary Method books for saxophone, clarinet, or flute. These books are a great way to introduce the basic mechanics of the instrument, as well as reading music. I generally like to branch out from the method books as soon as possible, by supplementing the basic reading with other technical studies and pieces. I believe that technique and musicality go hand in hand. I do not believe that one is more important than the other; instead, you cannot truly have one without the other. The most important aspect of playing music, is that, in and of itself, music! I like to foster an environment with any student where creativity and individuality are top priority. Especially with young students who are still self conscious, if they feel safe with their instrument in hand to create freely, I have no doubt they will be able to perform with greater ease later on in life.
