For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonards Essential Elements book, as well a basic understanding of music. Once the student has progressed to have a nice grasp of the fundamentals of music, I usually begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. I started teaching saxophone at the age of 14 as a volunteer in the Songcatchers program in New Rochelle, a service that provided free private lessons to children who couldn't afford them. Hobby students are encouraged to practice 20-30 minutes 4-5 days per week. For more serious students, the practice expectation is 45-60 minutes per day, 5-6 days per week. YEARS 8+: ADVANCED LEVEL This level of playing is equivalent to a college music major or someone who takes their music study very seriously. For beginner students I will use the book "Accent on Achievements" by Jack O'Reilly and Mark Williams. I will show them the fundamentals of their saxophones. I will teach students all the correct fingerings and the alternate fingerings. I will teach students how to read, write, and sight read sheet music.
