I am a third-year undergrad at NYU, studying Music Education with a concentration in instrumental performanceand I love it! Using a wide variety of repertoire and exercises, I focus on developing a solid foundation for tone production/intonation, articulation, and digital dexterity. At the same time, I encourage students to explore repertoire and style, both for listening and for performing, to help them find the music they really love. I am a very patient teacher. I set goals for my students but I help them progress at their own pace. I encourage them to learn the proven methods and to search what they are interested in learning. Learning every aspect of music is incouraged. There are proven teaching methods for learning the blues and improvisation, with knowledge of the right notes to play on what chords. As an educator, I believe it is important to continue school music instruction into private flute lessons. I like to communicate with a child's school music teacher in the beginning of flute lessons, so that I can keep music terminology consistent for students, as well as reinforce concepts they're already learning (while expanding musically of course!). I like to have students keep a lesson packet where progress is documented, along with a journal--I find that reflecting for five minutes after a practice session (things that went well, things you need help on, questions), are important tools when striving for success.
