Always start with the basics to build upon a strong foundation. For beginners, I typically recommend the Rubank series (now part of the Hal Leonard Corporation), likely the Rubank Elementary Method, or E. Wagner Foundation to Flute Playing, depending upon what level they've already achieved. I teach both to the book and to the student's needs preferences; thus, we may progress on a page-by-page basis, covering approximately 1 book page per week with a weekly 45-minute lesson to review and then progress, or focus on areas the student needs to strengthen, such as practicing long-tones to improve tone strength and quality and using the book lessens only as a supplement. Every new student comes to their first lesson with particular skills and musical interests. My job is to assess the students abilities and lead them down the appropriate paths to achieving their musical goals. My goal is to cultivate musicianship.  Students are encouraged to develop technical skills as a means of creative and emotional expression.  Sight reading and improvisation are taught simultaneously with music theory and composition. For young beginners I typically with Suzuki Book 1 or the Abracadabra Flute Book.  For children preparing for NYSMA I use the Rubank method with supplements from Forty Little Pieces and gradually move on to more solo repertoire.  For adult students I make repertoire selections based on students' interests while taking care to keep lessons both engaging and fun no matter their starting level.  Although my training is primarily classical, I am happy to incorporate music from other genres into lessons.
