I also try to allow my students a chance to play something they want at the end of lessons. As my students advance we add in classical pieces as well as jazz, and improvisation. Rudiments require attention and practice, but there is much more to learning an instrument than just technique; passion also needs nurturing. I want students to feel like learning the flute is accessible, and I love seeing them progress at their own pace. For beginning students, I place a large emphasis on the fundamentals i.e. scales, chord progressions etc. I also start them on solo pieces and like them to choose the pieces they are working on. I believe that if they choose their repertoire then they will have greater love and enthusiasm for the music. I also encourage them to push beyond what they think they can do.
