I am an experienced and enthusiastic private lesson instructor. I've been teaching for over 30 years and it never gets old to me! I learn as much as I teach from every one of my students. I am a member of the Sinclair Community College Wind Symphony and the Dayton Philharmonic Concert Band. I enjoy playing orchestral, opera, musical theatre and band music. I also do quite a bit of music directing for many local area theatres. Read More

My experience teaching goes back to high school in which I tutored students in multiple subjects including Spanish and English. I also would help my section to improve as a section leader. During my college years, I worked as a graduate teaching assistant which allowed me to help students primarily in music. Part of my duties included teaching smaller classes and tutoring students in music theory and ear training. When the flute professor was unavailable, I would run studio class with another teaching assistant. Read More

For beginning students, I combine multiple elements to understand the various aspects of their new instruments. With a combination of videos for inspiration, singing for audiation, and moving for connection to the instrument and how our muscles respond to it. My lessons rarely consist of sitting for the entire time. I believe that in the short time we have in lessons, it is more important to expose students to a variety of resources to investigate their new endeavor than it is to repeat repertoire for the sake of a quick result. Each lesson plan will be tailored to fit the student’s needs. Personally, I think one of the most important parts of teaching music is to give students a complete grasp of performing music by combining theory into their lesson plan to make a well-rounded musician. Their lesson plan will depend on their playing level: I will make sure they have fundamentals down for beginner students, but also adding solo repertoire and etudes to teach virtuosity and good performance practice for the advanced students. For my string students, I typically use Hal Leonard's Essential Elements at first, and then I introduce the Suzuki Method for solo repertoire once they have progressed on their instruments. For my vocal students, I find what type of music my student is interested in, and I then recommend a voice book that we will pick repertoire from. For my piano students, I use the Piano Adventures series, which includes the fundamentals as well as solo repertoire. Read More
