I approach teaching with a supportive and open mind. It is important to me that I create a supportive learning environment, while also challenging the student to reach new heights. Every student is different, and every student learns differently; so it is my job to identify a student's learning style and tailor each lesson appropriately. A comfortable and engaging learning environment, in which realistic goals are set, is incredibly important for musical growth. Read More

I've taught several students over the years and have had truly rewarding experiences. I have taken some time off from teaching private lessons to focus on my academic and clinical training in the field of music therapy. My main goal in teaching is to make my students feel engaged in their practice and motivated to pursue the challenge of learning an instrument. I want to provide a safe space for students of all ages to learn and grow with their instrument in a way that feels genuinely exciting and motivating! Read More

I believe that the key to a student's success in music is being motivated by passion. That is why I like to tailor each student's learning experience to their own individual interests, allowing them to press forward with the particular source of inspiration that motivates them to learn. It is a healthy combination of focus and enjoyment that results in the most enriching learning experience, which is why I make sure every exercise I assign a student comes with an understanding of the distinct purpose and goal of the exercise. For elementary students and some middle schoolers, I usually either work out of Standard of Excellence or Essential Elements book 1 to begin their studies or continue where they left off. For high schoolers and more advanced middle schoolers, I like to have them play solo flute pieces that fit with their ability level. If the student is in band at school, I also work through that music with them if they are interested. Read More

My methods used for piano students are the Randall and Nancy Faber teaching books; they are among the very best teaching materials due to their ease of comprehension, their logical sequence of concepts taught, and also their practical exercises and songs for the student. My methods used for Band instruments (trumpet, clarinet, flute, drums, and trombone), are the Standard of Excellence books, as they are also among the very best in regards to explaining musical concepts, presenting new songs, and logical progression. I have been teaching students since my sophomore year of high school, 3 years ago. I taught both beginner piano lessons and flute lessons of all levels. I encourage my students to keep a practice journal with their practice schedule, daily practice logs, long term and short term goals, lessons from notes, and anything else that can be useful for improvement. This allows students to continue progressing rather than finding themselves unmotivated to practice. Read More
