I started teaching when I was 16. I have taught small classes and private lessons for many years. I have developed a methodical system so that all aspects of flute playing are covered in a practical way that shows results from the first lesson. I teach so the student truly understand what they are playing - not just copying or playing by rote. I play for and with the student in duets so that the student can hear and be inspired by a beautiful sound and emulate it,. Read More

With each lesson, as my students improve and become more passionate about their music, I feel a sense of gratitude and reward them always for their accomplishments. So, with each lesson, I set small, steady goals for my student, depending on their level and so forth. Positively acknowledging their successes encourages them to keep moving forward, and makes them more passionate and more well rounded musicians. Note: I love to use metaphores and compare musical notes and ideas to every day situations, such as food, etc. Read More

My methods used for piano students are the Randall and Nancy Faber teaching books; they are among the very best teaching materials due to their ease of comprehension, their logical sequence of concepts taught, and also their practical exercises and songs for the student. My methods used for Band instruments (trumpet, clarinet, flute, drums, and trombone), are the Standard of Excellence books, as they are also among the very best in regards to explaining musical concepts, presenting new songs, and logical progression. I have also performed many styles of music including classical, baroque, contemporary, latin and jazz and would love to pass on my knowledge to others! My studio is in my home and works as both a lesson studio and a recording studio, so we can even record the progress of my students so that they can hear themselves and where they can improve. They can also enjoy hearing said improvements for themselves which help encourage students and gives them a feeling of accomplishment which is important! Read More

For beginning students, I typically use one method book and one book of simple melodies. My preferred method book is the Rubank series. The method book teaches the basics, while the melodies and songs keep things fresh and interesting for the student so they want to continue. For advanced students, I find significant, staple pieces that any advanced musician should have in their repertoire. This keeps the student engaged, and prepares them for anything down the road in their musical careers. Read More

I was certain I'd played terribly and would be forever shunned by the rock performing community, but it turns out nobody noticed my nerves - only the fact that I got up on stage and played that flute. This transformative moment for me led to many energetic performances, increasing in confidence each time. As an adult I've enjoyed performing in several ensembles including 8 years in a flute choir and various professional "jam sessions." I love performing, whether it be highly rehearsed and technical or improvisation. Read More

For beginning students just starting out method books like "Hal Leonard's Essential Elements" is very popular and useful or other similar method books that public schools use. In addition to working from the popular school method books and any band music I will assign different things for my students to work on to keep our lessons fun and engaging. Each student will receive instruction from me that will inspire them to practice and want to learn more and get better. Read More
