For beginning students, I typically use one method book and one book of simple melodies.  My preferred method book is the Rubank series. The method book teaches the basics, while the melodies and songs keep things fresh and interesting for the student so they want to continue.  For advanced students, I find significant, staple pieces that any advanced musician should have in their repertoire.  This keeps the student engaged, and prepares them for anything down the road in their musical careers. My teaching style requires the students to be consistent with their practice and warm ups, which helps to make lessons more efficient and allow students to see faster improvement. For all of my students, I put a lot of emphasis on the fundamentals of a woodwind player, which focuses on student's posture, embouchure, fingering, and breath support. I am a passionate flutist that loves teaching flute privately in addition to performing. In May of 2022, I graduated Summa Cum Laude from The Hartt School of Music with a BM in Flute Performance. While I was there, I studied with Janet Arms, flutist of New York City Opera. I have also extensively studied with Dr. Barbara Hopkins, Assistant Principal of The Hartford Symphony Orchestra. I make it a point to ask all students (or parents for my younger ones) to purchase a notepad where assignments, expectations, exercises, tips/tricks can be written down to help them progress during the year and into the following week of lessons. My favorite aspect about teaching is pushing students beyond the limit they place for themselves. That being said there must be a mutual understanding that I will do all I can to help students get over a "learning hump" as I call it- I have access to a plethora of journals, articles, teaching websites, a personal library, all of these materials can be scanned, printed out, emailed and whatnot for the benefit of my students. For novice students, I will most likely start with a method book such as one from the Essential Element's series. However, I will typically move students through the method book quickly and get right into performance repertoire that is appropriate for their age and level. Composing your own pieces and learning to improvise are extremely important in my method of teaching so I will also start teaching students how to write their own music as soon as possible. Read More
