At the start of the lesson, I will emphasize tone and air control which I've found makes a huge difference as a warm up. The primary books I will work out of are Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. As students progress and I feel that they have a handle on the basics, I will slowly start to incorporate other repertoire that will be exciting to play and perform. Also, it's never too early to start teaching scales and having students memorize them which will greatly help and improve their technical ability. Read More

I am an enthusiastic and positive flutist who enjoys teaching willing students, and I am always excited to share my musical ideas with others. I love living in Colorado and I currently play with the Denver Philharmonic Orchestra. Last year, I graduated with my Doctor of Musical Arts degree in flute performance and pedagogy from the University of Colorado, studying with Christina Jennings and working as a Teaching Assistant within the flute studio. For beginner students, I try to get them to learn a song by the first lesson. Eventually, I start them off by focusing on technique (learning notes and scales), tone development, etudes, and repertoire. Efficiency of effort in the fingers, usage of air, and holding of the body in order to produce a beautiful sound is a top priority. I believe the connection between the mind and body is very important, and you will find me often asking questions to engage the students in being aware of what they are doing as they are playing. When taking on beginner students, I typically use a blend of method books and novice musical pieces to begin to build musicianship. With intermediate musicians, I tend to seek out anything of interet to the student while incorporating harder repertoire to strengthen musicianship and to continue to peek interest in music. With adult musicians, I let them guide me to their area of interest, and I capitalize on that to guide them to better musicianship, no matter what their skill level may be. Read More

My teaching style is positive and encouraging. I want each of my students to progress at their own pace while I strive to challenge them in constructive ways to ensure rewarding progress. Everyone learns differently and I work to tailor every aspect of my lessons to meet the specific needs of each student. Building a comfortable and respectful relationship is very important to me. I want to make sure each student feels that I have their best interest in mind and to never be afraid to ask questions or ask for help. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I start with Rubank's Elementary Method book. This will provide the student with the basic fundementals. I will then introduce the student to a variety of solo repertoire for his or her instrument. I try to make my lessons as fun as possible so the child grows up with music as a fun, artistic outlet. For students who already have knowledge on their instrument or who are adults, I aim to find what the student is interested in, and adjust my instruction accordingly. Read More
