My teaching style is dependent on the particular student. For all students, I work to not over assign pieces. There is so much to learn in music, it can be tempting to try to teach concepts too quickly. However, an organized, logical approach that introduces one concept at a time works best. The best music theory teacher I have had was organized and was able to stick to teaching one concept at a time, with sequential lessons building on the information from the previous lesson. Read More

I first started teaching private lessons in 2001 while in High school. As section leader in my band, I went to the local middle school to help their clarinet players learn and improve on a 1 on 1 basis. Although I did not choose to persue music as my full time career, it is my full time hobby. Since high school, I have continued to give private lessons. I taught music at a private school for 2 years for grades K - 9. Read More

I have started teaching private lessons since high school through the Suzuki Method, and into my college and graduate school years. I have taken classes on pedagogy and teaching artistry in creative ways, such as teaching students to do improvisations and asking questions in order to get them engaged in the learning process. I have played classical, jazz, pop, and latin music, and can teach an array of different genres. Read More

I have been fortunate to have experienced a long and multifaceted journey in music: from performing to conducting and orchestra, from teaching to defending my PhD, from creating a music department to managing it. Nothing gives me greater joy than seeing the improvement in the skills and ability to enjoy music in students of all levels. My varied music and career experience gave me the experience and wisdom to guide my students to better themselves, be it musically, professionally or personally. Read More
Instruments: Trumpet
I challenge every student to exceed their own expectations. I believe everyone has more to learn and achieve, including me. Many students have taught me something, lets grow together. I use many books to start students and usually spend most of the lesson in the Arban's Complete Conservatory Method for Trumpet (Cornet). I like students to study classic trumpet solo's literature. Trumpet students will learn to slurring, double and triple tonging technics, as well as transposing and how to write music. Read More

I am very big on rewards programs and keeping students excited about what they are playing. This required reasonable, achievable goals that still push the student to go beyond their comfort level. Positive reinforcement is so important, especially with early players and when we hit walls in our growth. Seeing exactly where a student is at and understanding the encouragement they need is what makes a good teacher. Read More
