I assign method books, etudes (studies), and repertoire appropriate for the playing level of the student. My teaching emphasizes fundamentals first for students of every level. This fundamental study supports students in their pursuit of their musical and artistic goals. The method books I recommend students begin with are in the Rubank series, either Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced. Etudes to supplement will be the Cavally Melodious and Progressive studies. Once the student has progressed and has managed to grasp fundamentals, we can proceed to the next volumes within the same series. For adults, I typically do my best to see what they are interested, and will guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons intriguing. I began teaching beginner students when I was 16 years old and have been doing it ever since. It's never seemed like a "job" to me. I enjoy the excitement of a first-time student making their first sound to sight-reading duets with more experienced students. I started a flute choir at a local high school and would love to start one of my own at my studio. For a young adult or a prospective college student, I will generally focus on checking their embouchure, what their knowledge of major and minor scales are, how fluent they are reading sheet music, what reeds they should be playing on, and among things. We then move on to more advanced topics that would not be possible to cover in their band classes at their home school. Ideally, we would take a look back at our previously established goals, reevaluate them or set new ones. Read More
