My teaching experience dates back to my first year in Yamatai. As a more advanced percussionist, I took it upon myself to assist my fellow new recruits with learning the material outside of regular practice times with the Musical Director. With percussion, we found that taking a piece and breaking it into small sections that were easily repeatable gave the best results. I always communicate with my students to make sure they are satisified with what they are learning and to not get frustrated if they are 'stuck' on a certain lesson/exercise. For all my students, including vocalists, I always try to keep things enjoyable with mixed repertoire assignments. Even at beginner levels, I've seen some of my students cover the songs thattheywant to learn. I didn't learn to sing and play the piano by being forced to play songs I didn't enjoy as a listener. The key is finding music that is both challengingto create andfun as heck to perform. I am currently preparing multiple students for a graded solo performance that will be happening at the local NYSSMA festival this June at NYU. One of my past students had received entry into the Fiorello H. Laguardia High School Of Music Art and Performing Arts.
