Growing up my teachers always created an environment where the students can be creative and inspired. They nurtured us and helped mold us into to who we are today. As time went by I wanted to pass down what they instilled in me and be apart of the wave of teachers. I first began teaching at Neighborhood Music School's Summer Jazz Camp 8 years ago. My drum teacher selected me and other students to be mentors for the younger musicians. Read More

I have been teaching for more than 30 years, mostly in the public schools as well as privately. I have instructed large groups and ensembles, as well as smaller musical groups in and out of the public schools. Performing in various Jazz groups throughout the state has enhanced my teaching knowledge in the field of music education. My Masters degree in music education has enabled me to develop as a well rounded instrumental music teacher, and also as a flexible individual when it comes to understanding my students' musical needs. My methods of Teaching are simple; Teach according to the knowledge, experience, and ability of the student. Anything can be accomplished! The way I teach is a simple A, B, C method, by spelling out the best learning styles for an unsocial student, and a group of students. Lessons vary from beginner lessons of simple reading, to expert lessons of how to apply fills, patterns, chops, and time signature differences. Read More

My methods for teaching are directly linked to the desires of the student and what they hope to achieve by learning how to play an instrument. If a student is particularly interested in songwriting and composition, I'd be more inclined to emphasize the principles or harmony, counterpoint, structure and written music, whereas if a student is more interested in becoming an instrumentalist for a band etc., I'd be more inclined to emphasize rudiments, scale exercises and a jamming mentality. I teach all ages and skill levels, from drumpad to drumset. No matter how young the student is, learning how to play an instrument and read music is invaluable. I help my younger students prepare for middle school and high school level orchestra, and my older students for college music auditions and solo pieces. With my adult students I help them schedule music in their busy lives. There is no reason to put off playing an instrument if it's something you always wanted to do. Read More

I have a very successful and progressive teaching method. I base my curriculum on 'rhythmic vocabulary'; a method that instills reading skills, rhythmic recognition, immediate application in Rock and Pop music, improvisational ability, soon advancing to Jazz and World Music applications. In a nutshell, we begin at a students current reading level, or from scratch, and play all rhythms in a logical, progressive order; whole notes and rests, half-notes and rests, quarters and rests, eighths and rests, 16ths and rests. My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 20 years ago, and have been consistently teaching high school band and percussion for the last 15 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. I've also found that a combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy the instrument and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. Read More
