Regardless of the instrument or competency level, I always incorporate ear training, music theory exercises, and games into each lesson. With the help of method books and other sources of inspiration, I cater the curriculum to each student's strengths and weaknesses. Live performances are crucial to fully understanding any instrument, and so I encourage my students to perform live as much as possible--and I help them find those opportunities. I also make sure each student is well-organized, and make sure to keep a log of all assignments and lessons, so parents can see if the student is truly progressing. Read More

I find that as useful as many of the methods that I have found most useful for my own performance are, almost every one of my students in drums, percussion and cello requires a different blend of study materials. As a general rule, I rely on providing a balance of classic (some teachers go as far as to say 'canonical') books, and a wide variety of unique listening and independence exercises I've developed over the years. I have been teaching for three years as a part time instructor out of the Music Stores network in Reston, Chantilly, and Lorton. My approach includes teaching from current artists, historically significant artists, and lessons built from drum books in a way that builds fundamentals through cognitive development and positive reinforcement. One of the most important aspects of my teaching is to make playing the drums a fun, and enjoyable experience for the student in a way that enables them to carry an enjoyable experience to whoever they may play with in the future. As an educator, it is important for me to not only see my students learn and become better musicians, but thrive and have a good time doing so. For a student to learn music, they have to not only want to learn the instrument, but be inspired. Because of this, I will be lenient with the amount of work and the amount of practice required, as to be flexible with the students schedule and choices. Read More

Over the years I've gained alot of experience in what makes a great preformer a great preformer. Studying at Montgomery College and being part of the Latin and Jazz emsembles taught me that music in more of a language and any. Everything that is played is interpreted by the listener as a true of false statement. Much like a typicall dialog with another human being, we interact on more than one level. Read More

The most satisfying moment as a teacher is when a student finally "gets it", and for students, I find that lessons are the most fun when the student feels capable and not overwhelmed. I like to challenge my students and encourage them to exceed even their own expectations of their abilities. With this in mind, my overall teaching philosophy emphasizes gaining technical mastery over the student's chosen instrument, strong music reading and theory skills, along with creativity and improvisation to turn them into well rounded players who can hold their own in just about any music setting from the stage to the studio.
