Overview:
I am recognized internationally as a master drummer/percussionist and educator and facilitator, and I'm passionate about sharing my knowledge of rhythm and drumming with my students. I have been playing drums and percussion for over 45 years with extensive experience as a teaching artist in the classroom, a performer on stage, theater, and in the recording studio. I have studied with great teachers from many traditions in both drum set and world percussion. My international touring experience includes concerts in Europe, Asia, Australia, South America, North America , playing all styles of music with a wide variety of Artists. . I have developed my own unique rhythm instruction program "Rhythmic, and teach and record from my private Mar Vista Studio.
EXPERIENCE
I have over 25 years of teaching experience in both drum set and world percussion. I also teach a unique "hybrid" combination style of drums and percussion. My experience as a performer in all musical styles both on international stages and recording, has given me a deep knowledge and skill base for both live and studio performance. My experience as a veteran teaching artist, private instructor, and certified drum circle facilitator, has given me a unique perspective for systematic and comprehensive rhythm instruction. I am experienced teaching individual style and technique, playing in bands, and community settings. Many of my students have gone on to audition and land gigs as drummers and percussionists. I encourage my students to develop their own unique style and sound. I love to work with students of all ages and ability levels.
METHODS USED
My teaching approach focuses on fundamentals of technique, grooves, taste, and good timekeeping. I am interested in a student becoming a good listener and being able to play a variety of musical styles. I integrate rudiments, reading, drum fills, solo ideas, improvisation, and developing a unique style. I use a variety of methods, including skills I heard as a pro drummer on stage in the studio. I make use of books and other lessons depending on the ability level of the student , but I rely on classics like "Stick Control," "Syncopation" and "Accents and Rebounds". I am equally adept at teaching hand drumming, drum set, percussion, and hybrid drumming. I love to share many important concepts regarding the importance of the proper mind set of the drummer being a supportive musician who is adaptable, prepared, and easy to work with. I also teach unique facilitation methods for facilitating drum circles. I encourage students to video the key components of the lessons.
LESSON STYLE
I am deeply inspired by students who are eager and motivated to learn drumming. I meet each student where they are, looking and listening for the unique learning style of each student. After i access what approaches work best based on their ability level, I design a systematic practice routine based on Technique, Vocabulary, Independence, Coordination, and Musicality. If its required I can assist in writing charts for songs. Im focused on targeting the areas where improvement is needed and to encourage and challenge students to develop discipline, good habits, while striving to improve and overcome the weakness aspects of their drumming. I lecture, model, show videos, and play along with students to help them achieve the process they are capable of. I give a brief summary of each lesson at its completion.
