I draw inspiration largely from my Rudolf Steiner-inspired pre-college education and my Carl Orff-inspired higher education. Waldorf/Steiner education "emphasizes the role of imagination in learning, striving to integrate holistically the intellectual, practical, and artistic development of pupils" while the Orff Approach "combines music, movement, drama, and speech into lessons that are similar to child's world of play." For about 5 years I taught at a program called "Be Natural Music" where all of the students were children and teens. We put together kid rock bands and had them play shows a few times a year at local venues and festivals. I was the resident drum teacher for that program until my very recent move to New York. In my time there I helped the program expand into a new bigger store front and almost doubled their clientele. Read More

I am experienced professional mallet percussionist and bandleader with an emphasis on jazz and improvisation. In 2013, I was the first jazz vibraphonist be accepted in to The Juilliard School where I had the opportunity to mentor classical percussionists on how to improvise. Prior to Juilliard, I first attended Oklahoma City University studying music education/percussion performance. After studying for two years at OCU, I decided to transfer to Berklee College of Music to study with Ed Saindon and Dave Samuels, and to be closer to my mentor, Stefon Harris. Read More

For beginning students, I usually work with Hal Leonard's essential elements as well as use the piano as a tool for them to hear the pitches they are playing. Once the fundamentals are grasped we can work on introductory solo repertoire. For children I'd like to make this a bit more fun as well, introducing some easy tunes they will be familiar with or excited to play. (for example, Jason Derulo's song "Trumpets") For adults, I think its best to find out what their interests are and we can target what to work on from there. Read More

I was born and raised in Bogota, Colombia, I have a degree in Jazz performance from the City College of New York (B.Mus.), and recently graduated from a M.Mus. at William Paterson University on a full academic scholarship. My undying love for the music has taken me from Colombia to Canada, and to New York City, and granted me the opportunity to share the stage with world-class musicians like Al Foster, Will Vinson, Pat LaBarbera, Steve Wilson, Marco Panascia, and Jonathan Kreisberg among many others. Having graduated college only less than a year ago, my field teaching experience is minimal, but I did teach/tutor occasionally during my formal education. At Carnegie Hall I worked in part as a bandleader and arranger for my youth ensemble and acquired basic arrangement and collaboration skills. At Berklee I worked briefly as a music theory tutor and helped fellow students more cohesively grasp basic principals of harmony. As a guitar teacher, I try to incorporate the elements that I love most about playing and not only cover basics but also unlock a love for the instrument in my students. Read More

I teach because I love imparting knowledge and making connections in this way, and because I love the fundamental building blocks of musicianship and music theory. I have found that with careful attention to a student's character, the possibilities for learning are boundless. I like to let love guide the process, in the sense that I observe carefully the kinds of sounds that a student is fond of, and attempt to structure their learning in a way that empowers them to make those sounds.
