Often this means scales, chords, arpeggios, music literacy, performance practice and listening skills. Once my younger students have progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I begin to introduce solo repertoire that is appropriate for their first recital performance. I left school to hit the road with my first professional band. I spent the next 20+ years writing, recording and touring all over the country.
