Instruments: Drums
It's a well known fact that few things are as fun as playing the drums. My goal is to make the learning process as fun as actually playing. I encourage students to learn by demonstrating how even the most basic concepts function in the most complex settings. I find students have the most fun when they present me with something specific they wish to learn. By training students how to set goals, they stay inspired and motivated, which inspires and motivates me to challenge them! Read More

I find that it drives the student to learn the instrument for himself. And as the student wants, more and more, to prove that he can "beat the instrument," he begins to work at it in ways that I can't teach. Learning an instrument is more than showing up for one hour each week. Practice is everything. I feel that my methodology encourages students to take on the instrument head on and learn how to solve problems on their own so that they can practice and improve more quickly. Read More

My path as an educator began during my time studying history and philosphy in New Orleans, LA. I was playing live music almost six nights a week, and started helping out as an assistent at Tipitina's Sunday Workshop for young musicians. There I helped and watched the great Johnny Vidacovich teach young aspiring musicians the art of playing in an ensemble. While at Berklee College of Music I have helped teach in classrooms and clinics alongside many of the world's greatest musicians, including John Patitucci, Steve Bailey, Joanne Brackeen, Vadim Neselovsky, Carol Robbins, and Alain Mallet. My lessons for vocalists are divided into two sections: technique and repertoire. For singers, breath management skills are of primary importance as this directly affects intonation. I like to begin with Anne Peckham's The Contemporary Singer. My students can choose any songs they would like to sing while we work on musicianship skills including expression and lyrical phrasing. Singers who want to study jazz and improvisation use one or more of my pedagogical texts on scat singing. Read More

I taught my first lesson in Sudbury Massachusetts 19 years ago. I spent 16 years, teaching people of all ages seven days a week. Being able to teach music is a gift. I feel very fortunate. It’s some of the most rewarding work I could ever do. Over the years I’ve learned that recitals on a regular basis are crucial to a students progression. Some of the greatest time of my teaching career are watching the parents of that students faces while child performs something we have worked So hard on. Read More
