As stated above I believe that everyone learns at a different pace and through different pathways. I enjoy exploring different ways of thinking in regards to the instrument and music. As a master musician once told me I'm not your teacher, I'm just an advanced student. Every teaching situation for me is also a learning situation. As long as a student is eager and willing to learn and practice I will put everything I have into making sure they complete their musical goals! Read More

I have been teaching for 8 years, getting my start in my home town of Nyack, NY teaching jazz combos and private lessons at the Nyack Summer Music Camp. Since then, I taught private lessons to students of all abilities at Oberlin for 5 years, I was a staff teacher at the Avon School of Music in Avon, Ohio, I was a music instructor and counselor at Camp Encore/Coda in Maine, as well as other camps more local to NY, and I am currently an employee of the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance, where I am teaching music to kids at P.S 246. Furthermore, the reason why I want to be an educator lies in my fundamental belief in the potential of every student. While I eventually became a high performing student, for a number of years I underperformed and had to deal with other peoples notions about my capacity to succeed. To see the dramatic turn I took with academics motivates me to set the same example for other students who may once be in the same position I was. Read More

I typically like to start lessons with a warm up, and this is a good opportunity to see what level a student's technique is at. I immediately address anything that I see to be problematic in the student's technique, and we start working on ways to improve it as soon as possible. These can be simple exercises and when I see that my students are improving in these exercises and that their technique has gotten better, I always make sure that they also notice the difference and give them a sense of accomplishment. I draw attention to the importance of listening and help the student identify what to listen for. There is nothing more frustrating than practicing a particular fill 1000 times, only to later realize you've been practicing it incorrectly. This is very common among drummers young and old, but is easily dealt with by simply cultivating a sense of listening and apt imitation. However, I do not endorse perfectionism as a means of effective learning either, and I also will remind the student of the fact that sometimes when you're jamming, even if what what you're playing is not perfect, it's "good enough for rock and roll." This is part of the attitude of rock and roll that I feel is conducive to better, faster learning: a willingness to make mistakes, acknowledge them, learn from them, and move on. Read More

I began my teaching career almost 20 years ago at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music. While I was there, I worked with students of all ages and levels of playing ability. From that experience, I was able to not only develop a teaching method, but also to adapt and adjust that teaching method to accommodate for each student's unique personality and learning style. During my time there, I wanted to incorporate musical concepts that I learned from playing tablas in my lessons with drum set students. Read More

I learned some chords on Guitar from my hippy uncle. After a few weeks, I started teaching him, and he is 60 years old. Point is, he would listen to songs on the radio like songs from The Beatles and then teach me them. I would hear the chords and realize that he might be playing a similar chord, but not the exact chord. I would play the chord for him and then he would be impressed. Read More

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
