I typically begin with rhythm. The best melodies would not be worth anything if they aren't played with rhythm. After a student gains basic familiarity with their instrument I use a metronome (a musician's best and worst friend. Instead of playing traditional exercises, I teach students their favorite songs and techniques typical of their favorite genres. With my understanding of theory I try to incorporate a tiny bit of theory into every lesson to make an initially intimidating subject more accessible. Read More

The following are books that I start my lessons with. In addition, I supplement with materials that my students are interested in learning. If there is a particular song or style that they would like to learn(and is reasonably within their ability level or I am able to modify), I work to teach it to them. Drums: ***The book chosen depends on a student's level and personal goals, but these are great books to start with: Drumset For Preschoolers by Andy Ziker(for students ages 2-6, or students that would benefit from a color-coded system initially) The Drumset Musician By Rod Morgenstein and Rick Mattingly(great for beginning drum beats!) Alfred's Drum Method(for learning rhythms and rudiments) A Fresh Approach to the Drumset by Mark Wessels with Stanton Moore(teaches an intro to a variety of styles, including rock, samba, jazz, etc.) Piano: Alfred's All-in-One Course This book has simple, child-centered lessons that are reasonably paced, teaches beginning music theory, and allows students the opportunity to write. My teaching style is geared mainly towards going over fundamentals while finding the students interest in music. I encourage my students to listen to as much music as possible, to explore and find what they really enjoy. Playing along to music,or learning songs the student enjoys is a great way to apply the fundamentals, and make them more enjoyable to master. Read More

I am a passionate and professional drummer based in Austin, TX. I have performed professionally for 10 years and have experience in both the studio and touring across the USA. I truly love my job and am looking to expand my career into the teaching role. I have a deep knowledge and understanding of both drumming and music as a whole, as I am a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter as well. I graduated from Concordia University with a Bachelor's in business, while taking a variety of music performance classes. Read More

My teaching approach generally depends on who the student is, and what that student intends to accomplish. Generally, I am more of a music "coach" who teaches by teaching, and then doing. I typically use a book for the basis of reference, and then encourage the student to go beyond the notes on the page. I have a bigger passion in coaching students not to just copy another persons style or to simply learn exactly how a drum part goes. Read More

I don't want to be too easy and I don't want to be too hard. We all have life events that keep us from practicing 16 hours a day. Also, you don't want to practice 15 minutes a week either. A good balance between work and play is needed. However, the student will be rewarded for challenging themself- both internally via self esteem and a sense of accomplishment, and externally with praise from me and friends and family. Read More

I've been teaching for some 6 years now. I started teaching drums when I was in college and have never stopped since. Since then I have worked with students of all age groups, and I have learned that the key to keep a student is to help them have fun in class and to challenge them with new and exciting things to do on their instrument. A good balance between strict practice discipline and fun is the perfect combo, and thats what you'll get with me! Read More
