My goal will be to teach the student how to practice independently. I recommend setting up a practice schedule so that they know when they are supposed to practice. If the student is struggling with any of the weekly assignments, that is ok! Simply let me know at the next lesson so I know right where to help. No need to stress or worry if there is some confusion. I am a graduate of Musicians Institute College of Contemporary Music in Hollywood, California with a degree in drum/percussion performance. In 2005, I was hired as the drum instructor at Los Angeles City College. My teaching experience began in 2001, during an after school program. I facilitated a drum circle and taught lessons to kids from ages 8 to 15 years old. This lead to several parents of the students requesting private drum lessons. I have been teaching privately in student's homes over the last 15 years.  I find that defining the student’s goals, and centering the lesson around those goals keeps the individual inspired to progress forward. The Advanced Student is not required to perform all the material for the next lesson, as long as he or she can demonstrate that the idea behind that particular subject matter is understood the lessons will move forward. My lessons are designed to transfer info to the advanced student so that he or she can design own studies after finishing studying with me. Intermediate and beginner students are required to perform all the assignments for the next lesson. Read More

I will teach them at their pace and include songs at their level to make it interesting. In Dec I do Christmas Songs, Duets with my students and as they progress I will even pair them with a student on the same instrument to duet with or with a drum or guitar student (different from their instrument ) to get a band feel! I can still remember the joy I felt when I first started playing drums and my passion is helping people experience that joy. In my musical career, spanning 38 years, I have performed with varied groups including: drumset with The Road Runners Blues Band, Catfish and Paul Plumeri Blues Band; West African, Middle Eastern and Afro-Cuban percussion with Groove Merchant Drum Dance Ensemble; bodhran and bones with traditional Celtic bands Kintail, Cwn Annwn and Browne Jenkyn; and snare drum with The First Highland Watch of Pennsylvania and Rev War Re-enactors First NJ Volunteers. My teaching is very student-driven. I try to keep the students interests as a primary goal in keeping their interest level and so that they can progress in a musical situation. When they are interested in what they are learning, they strive for success. I try to acknowledge their successes and accomplishments which helps keep them learning and wanting to learn more. The best way to learn music is to teach it effectively, and I ALWAYS am learning from my students in a variety of ways, whether it be a new group that I'm not familiar with, or another style or genre that is new and fresh.
