My teaching style is geared mainly towards going over fundamentals while finding the students interest in music. I encourage my students to listen to as much music as possible, to explore and find what they really enjoy. Playing along to music,or learning songs the student enjoys is a great way to apply the fundamentals, and make them more enjoyable to master. Read More

For beginning and young students, we always start with fundamental concepts - producing a good sound, developing a sense of rhythm and pulse, building music reading skills, and fostering good practice habits. Once these skills have been developed, we progess to working solo repertoire and ensemble music. As student age and ability levels increase, I like to give the student increased input in the direction of study. No matter what, we keep things interesting and engaging, and fun! Read More

I am incredibly fulfilled by witnessing growth in my students, and love the "Ah-HA!" moments. My approach is based on the student's learning patterns and interests, and tailor my lessons to each individual student. I feel that music is the ultimate form of expression, and I try to make my foundation as limitless as possible. Growth is the main goal for me and my students. My job is not to make virtuosos, but to give my students the right practice and motivational tools so they can accomplish their goals while also having fun. Read More

I have several method books from college that I can easily print copies and share with my students. I also have several packets and other online resources that will help the students achieve their goal. Technique is essential and very important. So we'll make sure that the student will have proper technique and breathe properly in the rhythm of the song so things flow smoothly and everything is done with ease. Read More

My process is based on (but does not adhere strictly to) the Classical approach to Western tonal harmony and asks that the students develop certain fundamentals of technique and theory. In my experience, this structure creates the strongest foundation for pupils to build the rest of their musical lives on, whether professionally or solely for personal enjoyment. All of my students are on the fast track to studying music theory. Read More

For beginner students I like to keep to the fundamental elements of Jazz and Rock grooves while focusing on various time signatures. Another key practice we will always be refining on are the rudiments. This will keep those chops sharp for direct accuracy and speed. For my more advanced students I conduct a learning program based off the students interests in styles and advancements, doing so keeps the student engaged in the lessons with room to grow. Read More

I like to use custom lesson plans. I evaluate the student's playing and ask what they want to improve on and/or want to learn. Based off of this, I might use rhythmic study exercises from Ted Reed's "Syncopation" or hand patterns from the book "Stick Control", playing on both a practice pad and the kit. I like to have students play a simple 8th note groove, backbeat on 2 & 4 and incorporate bass drum precision exercises, eventually using different hi hat patterns. Read More
