I began teaching as a teenager when I was in Ann Arbor's psychedelic rock band SPROTON LAYER. I have taught friends and family off and on for many years. During the economic crash in 2009, I took a course on Teaching to understand different age groups and varied approaches in learning. Since then, I have taught steadily and found it very rewarding. One of the hardest things to get across to the Student is that the single most important thing to do is Play. Read More

During high school I was heavily involved in marching band and quickly took the position of Drumline section leader. This responsibility included writing cadences, organizing group practices as well as individual teaching. Currently, I am sponsored by SJC custom drums, who have made me 2 custom drum sets. This is the same company that makes drums for Tre Cool of Green Day and even Cyrus Balooki of New Found Glory. As far as direct drumming inspiration, I often cite 3 people. Read More

There really is no limit to which methods work for people. Every person learns their own way, and it is true that a variety of methods work for an individuals learning process. I enjoy employing all ways of experiencing music including playing by ear, reading sheet music, learning music theory and its practical applications, as well as playing with others and truly feeling what the music is wanting to say. When I see my students improving and chasing their dreams, it fills me with utter joy! I like watching students think critically about what they are doing while working through any incongruencies in their thought process. Each student is different and requires specific teaching styles in order for them to progress efficiently. I like to get to know my students' interests and how they view the world, which I then use to aid them in achieving their goals. Read More

I believe the longevity I've been able to achieve with my students has come from the aforementioned solid foundation mixed with the students genuine interests and ability to see their own progress. I love teaching rock and pop (the stuff so many youngins want to learn) but always find creative ways to sneak in theory and academics. I also like to occasionally provide progress reports or "lesson sheets" to parents or students to make sure everyone is on the same page and still having fun! Read More

My experience is derived from my work as an instructor at an Ann Arbor music school. I have taught a wide range of ages, and enjoy every age I teach for different reasons. I believe everyone has something new to offer. I have played in punk, rock, and ska bands, as well as playing with certain groups at the music school. I have planned and orchestrated a summer camp and run rehearsals on a weekly basis, with groups of young kids, so I can definitely handle kids of any age. Read More

When starting with a beginner student, I typically start by asking general questions about their interests and the music genres they enjoy. Then, we move on to the basics of maintaining proper form, understanding rhythm, and practicing simple exercises to ensure they start off with the right foundation. After that, we focus on learning the first few basic beats and ensuring they have a good understanding of how they are played. Read More
