I have been drumming and performing music for nearly 30 years. I started out playing by ear at 5 years of age and shortly after received professional lessons. I became interested in a diverse variety of musical genres that grew as I did. I was very lucky to have two supportive parents, Bryan and Deborah who noticed my talents and nurtured them at a very young, impressionable age, introducing me to different instruments and live music. I approach every lesson with every student with a focus on patience, empathy, dedication to excellence for myself and my student, and a big dose of fun! For younger students and for beginners, I spend a good amount of time on laying out the basics of the instrument, the foundational techniques of playing, basic music theory, and discussions that allow the student to tell me what influences them and what they most want to achieve in music. I try to instill the positive qualities that come from music including the enjoyment of listening and the gain of focus and concentration when learning how to play. I will give each student material and set goals weekly at a pace that he or she is comfortable going at while still challenging the student. Teaching is something that is a passion for me because I understand how important that time can be in that persons life and I truly enjoy sharing the information. Read More

I love to see how much all of my students improve and overcome their "blocks" on the drums. I usually make a little recording of the new student on day 1 and then make them listen to it after a few lessons: It always surprises them to see how far they've gone! Those little accomplishments are a great motivation for my students to "keep at it" and continue progressing and growing as musicians. Read More

I perfer to make sure the student has an understanding of the first position of the instrument before moving on. We will learn the first position in a way that will allow the student to have fun and develop their own playing style. Next we will move up the instrument learning about theory and chordal harmony. If a student can be consistent with practicing over the period of a month then the habit of practicing will get easier and become more natural and less like a chore. Hard work in the beginning=life long habits. I have a few books I recommend purchasing for beginning to intermediate drum students such as The Drum Set Musician (Rod Morgenstein), Stick Control (George Lawrence Stone) and Syncopation (Ted Reed). Instruments: Drums
I teach basic stick technique using George Lawrence Stone's Stick Control, and I have numerous hand exercises based on patterns from that book that I warm up with every lesson. Starting with snare drum and basic hand technique also will incorporate rhythm reading, and basic limb independence. When my students start behind the kit, they will start by applying some of those hand exercises to the drumset, and also learn how to orchestrate and play basic grooves. Read More
