All program students are assigned a daily routine to complete, song to perform, and focus exercise. For single lessons, I perform an inventory of skills, supplementary lesson, and assessment for an improvement plan. I select technique and training material in conjunction with any programs in which the student is currently participating (i.e. school band programs, other instruction, etc.). For more advanced students, consideration is given for playing goals, projects, performances, etc. Read More

I always enjoy seeing the light bulb moment my students get when they get something right, and learn something new. My teaching method is a simple stacking method we start with a lesson, I try to find where the student may struggle most and spend time with that. Then we move forward, but revisit the lesson prior for continuity. Lip slurs, scales and fundamentals for the brass players and rudiments, speed and handing techniques for all percussionists the practice and teaching regiment is simple yet effective. Read More

With students learning or continuing education on the piano, like to start with the basics. Once the student begins to have a grasp for that i begin to introduce reading music and theory. I also like to prepare the student to play any genre of music by sheet music or by ear as well. As far drums i also start with the basics, once the learn and grasp that we continue by learning different techniques of playing as well as teaching basic rudiments and how to read music and play drums by ear. I really covered this in the above information,so continuing in more detail,it really depends on each individual student, their level of ability and age that determine the course of study. It also depends on the instrument. Some instruments like piano, violin or viola, books are more practical because the music is notated. With most fretted instruments, music is written in tableture which was originally used for the lute and brought back i think in the 1970s.Its easier than reading music and is more practical for those instruments. All of my students have the same basic foundation. On top of that foundation we add in specific tutorials geared towards the type of music that they want to plat. We identify key elements and styles within that genre of music that their interest in. Then I construct a specific lesson plan geared towards that particular style. This is part of my process because understanding what specific style they prefer to learn. Read More

Lessons are usually pretty casual. I like to use a book so that we always have a clear path. Students can request that their lessons be more vigorous (say if you're auditioning for a part or instrument for some activity) but otherwise, I tend to keep things more laid back. Read More

I encourage an understanding of music and drum-set/percussion performance by listening/analysis of music andtranscription of different rhythmswith a practical application to the drums/percussion. I aim to promote multi-cultural awareness by incorporating traditional rhythms from around the globe into modern-day drum-set and percussion performance. I use a number of different teaching strategies to tailor-make the learning experience for each student. A few of the many books I use are 'Syncopation for the Modern Drummer' by Ted Reed, Stick Control for the Snare Drummer by George Stone and Teaching Rhythms by Joel Rothman. Read More
