Initially (and throughout) I place a high value on performance fundamentals. I start with a focus on proper posture and breathing. Once this can be executed I breakdown the nomenclature of the student's instrument, how to put it together and break it down. My first job out of college was teaching at a charter school where I saw all the students in the school for 9 week periods. We established an after school band where private lessons were the main form of growth. In my next job, I taught students from beginning, in sixth grade, through their senior year of high school. There are so many methods to use. I started off in the church as a worship leader, piano player, and a drummer. I believe in learning to read music and playing by ear. It is a reason why I teach both. Ear training is good for a lot of churches if you decide to play or sing in one.
