I always approach teaching on an individual basis. I find out what the student loves about music, and what made him or her want to learn in the first place. We set realistic goals for pace and have fun. I often mix traditional work with fun work. For example, alongside conventional ways to learn melody and harmony, I'll tie those lessons into specific songs or pieces of music that the student likes, to show the relevance of the material and the importance it has, at the same time keeping the student interested. My teaching does not cut corners. I often tell young students to watch the movie "Karate Kid" and play close attention to the "Wax on, wax off" scenes. (Fortunately, there are practice supplements using play along tracks that make this process more fun and less tedious). I not teach "songs", but I do teach the language of drumming and the language of music. I am an advanced reader and all of my students will be required to read at least some music, however I do understand that many students learn by ear. Read More

I started teaching in high school when friends would ask me questions about drumming techniques. From this I began taking on elementary age kids and grew to about 10 students a week in New York before leaving for Berklee. I have taught and performed for many Berklee Summer Programs including Basslines, Vocal Workshop, Stage Performance Workshop and Five Week. For instance, I always teach my students how to read, not only because it makes you a better musician and trains your brain how to think differently about music, but because it enables you to be able to play with groups that require a certain level of reading such as a pit band for a musical, an orchestra, a jazz band, choral gigs, etc. Read More

I beleive no single approach or method works for every student and having the ability to adapt is an essential skill for developing lasting student/teacher relationships. I started teaching music about 10 years ago, and Ive always enjoyed working with students. Ive performed professionally in several bands on multiple instruments in the past 10 years, and Ive also done a good bit of studio work from composition and recording, to producing, to mastering. I emphasize practice, having fun, and learning useful skills as the keys to success in music lessons.
